1080p gaming is still a thing. Even with 1200p, 1440p and 1600p being around for a while, 1080p is used by a large set of PC users. Mostly, it due to affordability. That’s the bare minimum resolution that gamers can afford to buy. Nvidia even has rolled out DSR (Dynamic Sample Resolution) not just for the latest Maxwell cards, but also the older 400, 500, 600, and 700 series thanks to 344.42 Forceware roll-out.

With Windows 10 release around the corner and with also Nvidia releasing WHQL DX12 drivers for Windows 10 Technical Preview, it looks that 1080p will say a bit more longer. Nvidia GTX 960 is the card that is aimed towards such users, and Zotac GTX 960 AMP! Edition is a non-reference, factory overclocked variant. At the time of launch, GTX 960 was categorized as $199 cards. This card is currently priced at  Rs.19,875 IN/ $223.76 US / £169.13 UK and EUR 226.89 in France. Zotac does have a neat feature- to automatically turn off the fan.

GM 206 Core in GTX 960 GM206 SMM

Nvidia GTX 960 uses GM206 Maxwell 2.0 core. One of the highlights in Nvidia’s pitch about Maxwell 2.0 is the low power consumption for all of their lineups compared even to its 700 series cards. GM206 core has two graphic processing clusters, 1024 CUDA cores, 64 Texture Units, 32 ROPs and a 2x 64-bit memory controller. It’s based on 28nm fabrication and the card uses a 128-bit bus which the green team seems to be confident that it will be adequate. GM206 SMM uses 96KB shared memory, just like Kepler sharing 64KB L1 memory. Power requirement for GTX 660 IS 140 w  while  170 W for GTX 760. GTX 960, the reference variant, needs 120 W. The GPU has a base clock 1127MHz and boost 1178MHz.

Nvidia wants MOBA players to buy this card. So the question is not only if GTX 960 is good, but if its good to make older GPU users to adopt a GTX 960.
